The Spring Layoffs In the spring round, eleven Career faculty were laid off in CAS and two in the College of Education.  To accomplish these layoffs, the administration invoked Article 16 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, giving notice to Career faculty in both colleges. However, the administration refused to provide the Union with information regarding all the layoffs, citing personnel and privacy concerns. Instead, the administration insisted that the Union should be notified of layoffs by affected faculty members; once they had done so, the administration said it would provide us with the justifications that are required under Article 16….

Yesterday, several members of the United Academics Executive Council met with Provost Long to hear the Scholz administration’s plan for anticipated faculty layoffs. While we appreciate the Provost’s commitment to communicating with UA, it is important to note that these meetings have not been a venue for active consultation, but rather a space where we have been informed of administrative plans. We have shared our concerns within these meetings, but these meetings are not like bargaining where proposals are exchanged between parties. Dear Colleagues, As of today, eleven faculty members within CAS have received layoff notices. There will be others forthcoming in other schools in the next few weeks. The University is utilizing the provisions of Article 16. Notices of Appointment of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) to do this. The notice period (whether 30, 90 or 365 days) is also regulated by the CBA. We have known for some time that there would be cuts, but it does not make it any easier for affected faculty. Dear Colleagues, The public communications of the administration continue to indicate that their plan moving forward is to make pre-emptive layoffs of workers over the summer in preparation for projected budget deficits next year. Career lines, and perhaps even entire programs, have been identified for likely cuts. Meanwhile, the UO is outsourcing labor to low-paid, limited duration roles. We are extremely disappointed that the UO has chosen this “chop from the bottom” path without engaging in authentic deliberation with campus stakeholders like our labor union. General Membership Meeting Postponed May 1st is International Workers’ Day! Due to scheduling issues on campus, we’re pushing the Spring General Membership Meeting that was to be held that evening back a couple of weeks.
