Executive Actions and Threats to Higher Education
We are closely monitoring the executive orders and subsequent legal responses that affect higher education. The current federal administration is trying to overwhelm the system by issuing a large number of executive orders. Their intentions include having local organizations lose their focus to stop them from achieving their principal goals. Given the pace of events, we may not respond to them in our weekly communications. However, we have been holding regular events, caucuses, and office hours for members to discuss the events as they unfold.
As a member of United Academics you are also a member of our national affiliates, the American Association of University Professors, the American Federation of Teachers, and the AFL/CIO, who are all actively fighting unlawful executive orders. There are many opportunities for members to engage with our affiliates to help craft their response and share what they are doing to date.
Please consider joining us at one of these upcoming meetings to learn more about how UA and our national affiliates are working to protect academic freedom and the research missions of our universities.

What: Across the country, faculty unions like ours have held Strike Schools in order to prepare to take collective labor action—and that’s how they won! This session is based on the lessons learned from recent, victorious strikes and strike threats by the faculty union at Rutgers and by our own GEs in GTFF here at the UO.
Why: Strike School is designed to help us build the knowledge and confidence we need to win the contract we deserve. You will learn ways to help grow our solidarity leading up to a strike, the basic logistics of striking and picketing, strategies to maximize our impact, and other actions you can take NOW to turn our demands into victories.
This training is open to all UA members, but if you have ever considered being on the front lines as a Picket Captain, this is your call to step up and learn what it takes to help lead!
We can win this fight by building our power together—join us at Strike School!
Please RSVP.
