The waiver on Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) requirements expires Oct. 31, 2022. United Academics’ affiliate union, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), holds a weekly online debt clinic and provides free access to Summer, an online platform that has helped thousands of AFT members apply for PSLF and other loan relief.
Summer is an online student loan management platform that includes tools to help navigate the various forgiveness programs and has a team of employees that members can consult. You can find more info and enroll here. You'll need your AFT member ID number. You can request your AFT member number on the AFT Member Benefits page using UAUO’s Local #3209, or you can contact UA staff at [email protected] to request this identification number. Faculty must be a member of United Academics or another local to receive this, and other, benefits.
As one bargaining unit member said, "Look even if you don't think it will apply. Until October 31st, the kinds of loans and the kinds of payments have vastly expanded eligibility. It's really worth investing a little time to see how it could help reduce or even eliminate your student loan balance."

- We encourage members with student debt to enroll in the AFT’s student debt clinics, which provide information on how to enroll in income-driven student loan repayment programs and help in enrolling in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
