Carl Megel Scholarship for High School Students Planning to Further Their Education
Carl Megel started teaching during the 1920s where he taught grades 1st thru 6th in a one-room school house for $45 a month. He began his union work in the 1930s when he was elected as an officer of the Chicago Teachers Union. He served as President of AFT from 1952 to 1964.
Program Eligibility
- Must be a child or grandchild of an AFT-Oregon member in good standing. (“Fair Share” payers are not members)
- Must be a 2018 graduating high school senior
- Must be enrolling in an accredited higher education, trade or technical program during the next academic year
- Must submit completed application before the deadline January 31, 2018.
As President of AFT, from 1974 to 1997, Albert Shanker worked to build a powerful union including not only teachers, but also paraprofessionals, public employees and healthcare professionals. During his presidency, AFT tripled its membership and grew to more than 900,000 members in 1997.

Shirley J. Gold Scholarship for Members Planning to Further Their Education
Shirley Gold was an innovative teacher and union leader who spent her life working for human rights. She served as President of Local 111 PFSP for 5 years, moved on to becoming President of AFT-Oregon and served 16 years in the Oregon House of Representatives.
Program Eligibility
- Must be an AFT-Oregon member (“Fair Share” payers are not members)
- Must be enrolled or enrolling in an accredited higher education, trade or technical program for the 2017-18 academic year
- Must submit completed application before the deadline
