March for Science This Weekend in Eugene

We urge you to join United Academics at the March for Science in Eugene this Saturday, April 22 (Earth Day)… and bring your family, friends, and colleagues.  Look for the United Academics banner and come march with us!

Location: University of Oregon Memorial Quad

Day and Time: Saturday April 22nd, Noon, march at 1.

What’s Happening: Local DJ Shawn Kahl and singer Halie Loren join our speakers- Sarah Chylek, science teacher at North Eugene High School, Professor (and United Academics Representative) Jeffrey Cina from the University of Oregon, Professor Paul Ruscher, Dean of Science from Lane Community College and Representative Peter Defazio!

“The March for Science on April 22nd is our opportunity to remind the world, and our leaders especially, that science must shape public policy and inform the laws we enact. Science serves people all over the world. Science enables innovation. Science provides us with clean water, electrical power, transportation, global communication, productive agriculture, and modern healthcare. Science is good for America and for the world.”                                                                                                                   — Bill Nye

The contempt for science by our national leaders threatens academic and intellectual freedom at the University of Oregon as well as funding for the many important research projects that depend upon federal grants (e.g. National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Education, Department of Energy, and National Endowment for the Humanities).

How to Participate: BE VISIBLE! We want to see you and what you care about. This is a living, breathing event so come as a group, bring your message, and make sure it can happen on the move. BE POSITIVE! Honor our hosts, our city, and your fellow marchers with your energy, words, and actions.

WANT TO HELP?
1) Promote the event across social media and by word of mouth. Know a local reporter, writer, photographer? Ask them to cover the event.
2) Come prepared! Hold a sign-making party, organize to come in costume, craft a piece of performance art. We want to see it!
3) Bring a garbage bag and clean as you go. Let’s leave the route cleaner than we find it!
4) Have an exit plan. The march is two hours, but Earth Day is all day. Find a way to channel your energy and choose a post-action so we can disperse productively.
